The Mixtape 7/3/18: Snail Mail, Camp Cope, Kids See Ghosts

Slow and steady wins the race

After five weeks of being denied the Mixtape's top spot by Childish Gambino, Kanye West, and Kids See Ghosts, Snail Mail has reached the pole position. I had a suspicion that would be the case as the rush from the June-long fix of new Kanye-centric tunes wears off. Snail Mail's "Heat Wave" has been around a couple months, while Camp Cope's "How to Socialise and Make Friends" has been tattooed on my grey matter since the end of January. Those tunes have legs and I can easily see both songs ending up in my top 10 of 2018. It's actually not that hard to imagine both being near the top of the Mixtape for several more weeks.

Lots of new entries this week including disco-fied indie pop from Mitski, even harder to classify WTF pop from Let's Eat Grandma and Melody's Echo Chamber, metal like it's 1984 from Electric Citizen, and Lizzo's summerlicious banger, "Boys."

Vic Mensa, Late Bloomer, and THICK all make significant jumps toward the top 10 while some songs that had been around the past few months finally slid off the list - see you when it's time to determine my 'best of 2018', Childish Gambino, Hookworms, and Drake. Speaking of Drizzy, color me indifferent to his newly-released Scorpion. "Nice For What" will most likely be the only Drake song I'll be talking about in another six months.

On the horizon

This coming New Music Friday looks bleak and barren compared to the last several weeks that have produced highly-anticipated releases from Snail Mail, Let's Eat Grandma, Kanye West, Kids See Ghosts, Kamasi Washington, and Courtney Barnett. This will be one of those weeks where I find myself giving some love to already-released albums that I've yet to fully dive in to; new SOPHIE, Gorillaz, Melody's Echo Chamber and Let's Eat Grandma will be on repeat.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July, my lovely readers!
